The First Week of Caregiving: What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Do

You just became a caregiver and everything feels overwhelming. Here's a simple, week-one checklist to help you get your bearings without losing your mind.

Take a breath. You’re not behind.

If you’re reading this, chances are your life just changed. Maybe a parent had a fall, a spouse got a diagnosis, or you suddenly realized that “helping out” has become a full-time role. Whatever brought you here, the most important thing to know is: you don’t have to figure it all out today.

Your week-one checklist

The first week isn’t about being perfect. It’s about getting oriented. Here are the things that actually matter right now:

  • Gather the basics. Find out what medications they’re taking, who their doctors are, and whether there are any upcoming appointments.
  • Assess immediate safety. Are there fall risks at home? Can they get to the bathroom safely? Is food accessible?
  • Identify one other person. You need at least one person you can call. A sibling, a neighbor, a friend — anyone who can be a sounding board.
  • Write things down. Start a simple notebook or phone note. Dates, symptoms, questions for doctors. Your future self will thank you.

What can wait

Long-term care planning, legal documents, and family meetings are all important — but they don’t need to happen this week. Give yourself permission to focus on the immediate.

The best thing you can do right now is not panic. The second best thing is to start small.

You’re already doing more than you think. And we’re here to help you figure out the rest, one step at a time.
